7. Dr. Britt Baker Vs. Ruby Soho - Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Final

Ruby Soho
AEW

As an end-to-end spectacle, this was a big-time attraction and a very moving scene - so much so that the wrestling in-between didn't matter too much.

Which is just as well, because much of Baker Vs, Soho was flat.

A strange tug-of-war bit sapped the enthusiastic reception, and Baker's heat portion was rather inert. That it followed a wicked missile dropkick from Soho to the outside just dragged the action down. It was a long and basic middle phase that failed to spark a sustained crowd reaction, which probably resulted from Soho's very loose underdog character arc. Her "so close yet so far" run was badly under-baked. The crowd didn't know whether or not to invest, so they didn't over the long haul. The last three minutes were very good, although this was the worst night possible for what seemed like two dozen wrestlers to do a piss-poor Sharpshooter. Soho's execution was hardly excellent, but Baker paced the struggle so well that the crowd bought it as a finish.

The finish was anti-climactic and is hardly going to help Soho long-term, but it was a worthy final that exceeded (low) expectations, and the sight of Martha Hart beaming throughout the title ceremony was nothing short of beautiful and admirable.

Star Rating: ★★★
