Good follow up was always going to be crucial for new poster boy Steve Austin after his WWF Title win over Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XIV. Creative had just the ticket, but it defo wasn't what fans expected. Mick Foley's Dude Love character went rogue to become a 'Corporate Dude' doing the bidding of Vince McMahon, and it was glorious.

Generally, people tend to talk about the pair's epic match at Over The Edge 1998 when discussing the feud, but few mention Unforgiven the prior month. It did a quite brilliant job of setting up what was to come on the following PPV. Mick was in his element as someone who was effectively being used by McMahon, and both he and Austin immediately meshed in-ring. It’s a shame that this one gets overlooked.

Ow, have mercy indeed.

Dude and the 'Stevester' previewed the carnage of Over The Edge by coming through with an ideal main event that was fun-filled for different reasons. McMahon wasn't special ref, and the likes of Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco didn't have their defined ring announcer and timekeeper roles yet, but fans were lured in by the thought of ex-tag partners Love and Austin knocking lumps out of one another.

This was another proving ground moment for Foley: He'd shown he could headline as Mankind, but how about as Dude Love? Later, he'd get the chance to do so as Cactus Jack too, thus completing a unique trio. If only Unforgiven '98 was given the same love (ahem) its sequel received one month on.
