12. 2000’s Ace KOTR Quarter Final
It's unreal that Kurt Angle became European, Intercontinental then WWF Champion during his first 12-18 months as a full-time star in the WWF. Further, Angle had the distinction of becoming King Of The Ring in June 2000. Bonus prize if you can name the 3 men he beat that night. That's right, it was Chris Jericho, Crash Holly and Rikishi.
Your prize? Watching the quarter final between Kurt and Chris.
They had arguably one of the better matches on the card that night, but it's rarely (if ever) brought up when recapping the pay-per-view. People gleefully talk about Angle's crowning, remember the unique 6-man tag main event and recoil in horror when recalling Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco in a 'Hardcore Evening Gown' battle, but few ever say: 'Hey, remember Angle beating Jericho? That was magic!'.
It was magic. Other quarters like Crash vs. Bull Buchanan and Rikishi vs. Chris Benoit were nothing to write home about, but Angle vs. Jericho was rock solid. It’s a largely forgotten match between the pair, and they had plenty of them in 2000 alone. Who will ever forget Jericho calling Angle "Kurt Angel" at No Way Out the same year, for example?
KOTR's offering didn't stick as long in the brain box as NWO, unfortunately. That isn't a reflection of its quality inside the ring though - both guys went close to 10 minutes on a show packed with shorter matches, and they maximised every single one of those mins.
Honestly, it's ridiculous that Kurt was as good as this considering how green he had to be.
