15 Things We Learned From WWE Unreal
11. CM Punk Was Top Choice To Win The Rumble
In episode 2, Triple H outright asks a room full of writers who should win the men’s 2025 Royal Rumble, and it was almost unanimously CM Punk. Michael Kirshenbaum, who is a supervising producer, said John Cena should “play the hits” in his final year and win instead. He was one of the only ones who believed Cena should win instead of Punk.
Then, veteran Michael Hayes chimed in to pitch Jey Uso winning it, and you can see Triple H’s brain start clicking into overdrive. For his part, Hayes says it was Ed Koskey who “got him thinking about Jey”. They agreed that Uso had caught fire with the fans, and Michael though WWE should capitalise on that because of his newness and freshness as a top singles star.
This is all interspersed with clips of Hunter pulling Jey aside to have a word before Raw. The boss tells Uso he “wants to strap a rocket to him”, but warns that it can also “all go away” if he’s complacent. Trips mentioned that to the writers, and talked about Uso being blown up during his entrance. That’s something Jey himself touches on - he’d become so accustomed to having a partner he could tag out to for a breather, so getting used to being a singles wrestler took some doing.
It's incredible that Punk was pretty much pencilled in to win the 2025 Rumble before Hayes hatched a shock alternative. Being fair to Triple H, he took it onboard without gushing with praise or shutting Jey winning down right then and there.
'The Game' wanted time to think about it, and he needed to have a heart to heart with Uso first before committing.
