17 Things We Learned From An Evening With Rey Mysterio (Oct 26)
6. He Was Allowed To Keep His Mask On A Technicality
In Mexico there exists a body known as the Commission of Boxing and Lucha Libre, a powerful organisation capable of suspending superstars from wrestling if they violate its rules, as recently felt by longtime Mysterio-pal, Psicosis, when he was suspended in late 2014 after hitting a ringside security guard during his match. The Commission regulates who can and who cannot wear their masks and why. If a wrestler loses his mask as a result of a Luchas de Apuestas (literal translation: 'gambling fight') it is considered a great infraction of the codes of the Commission if he continues to wear it, which presented Mysterio with a problem in 2002, when WWE insisted he put the mask back on after losing it. However, Rey was able to circumnavigate the rules of the commission because, according to him, he only lost his mask in a Mask vs Hair match, not the typical Máscara contra Máscara (mask vs mask) stipulation that carries much more weight in Mexican tradition. The Commission turned a blind eye to the infraction and Rey went on to become one of the most famous masked superstars of all time.
