17 Things We Learned From An Evening With Rey Mysterio (Oct 26)
7. Vince Understood The Mask, From A Marketing Perspective
Rey accused Bischoff of not only failing to understand the cultural importance of the mask, but also its marketing potential. Not so, Vince McMahon. Even though Vinny Mac cannot be called the most culturally sensitive of souls, Rey certainly credits him as being infinitely savvier than Bischoff from a marketing perspective. Vince, ever mindful of the mighty dollar, and Mysterio's potentially huge child fanbase, insisted that Rey put the mask back on, and would never ask him to unmask in the future. So switched on was Vince that, within one week of Rey debuting in WWE back in 2002, they already had mask-based t-shirt designs in the works. Vince may not have appreciated the personal and historical importance of wearing the mask, but unlike Eric Bischoff, he certainly knew which option would bring in the most coin.
