4 Ups And 3 Downs From Last Night’s WWE NXT (July 1)

3. Dempsey/Regal & Jordan/Gable Amuse

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbqXuJ_OvbY Last night, there was yet more proof that NXT knows how to do comedy hundreds of times better than RAW and Smackdown. Bull Dempsey and his junk food obsession, and Gable & Jordan's creepy/endearing bromance wrought much amusement whilst still being restrained. There was no R-Truth ranting about spiders, or little people dressed as animals, or anything else that makes wrestling fans want to trepan themselves with a dessert spoon. Subtlety and grounded performances made the segments amusing rather than a waste of time. First off, it seems humble pie is on the menu. Regular reader's of these NXT rundowns will be aware that the Bull Dempsey angle was on the Downs list last week for being too stupid. Well, look up and see those flying pigs, because last night's segment was really, really funny. There was much to love, whether it was Dempsey going hog-wild on a vending machine, William Regal's stoic, dignified repulsion, Dempsey being an adorable slob, or Corey Graves' killer punchline: "Bull Dempsey versus a vending machine would be a main event on any planet." Elsewhere, it's still difficult to pin down exactly what's happening between Chad Gable and Jason Jordan. During a backstage interview recorded after last week's match (but aired last night) Gable mopped the sweat off Jordan's brow with one of his now-customary 'Gable towels', and told him that he'd been watching all his matches. Add this to Gable writing his name on Jordan's locker, and there's a really weird Fatal Attraction thing going on, but they undercut it with humour at every opportunity. That's odd, but quite fresh. One has to hope that they're not focussing on the 'Gay' part of the name 'Gable' (that's exactly the sort of homosexuality-as-a-punchline nonsense that WWE loved to do a decade ago) but you should trust NXT. They wouldn't let you down ... right?
