40 Greatest Stories Wrestling Ever Told

32. A ‘Timeless’ Hollywood Story (AEW, 2024-2025)

There's time yet for this to change, but...Blake Monroe hasn't done anything in WWE on par with her AEW run as Mariah May at time of writing. Her stint as Toni Storm's protege between an October 2023 debut and her memorable July 2024 turn was outrageously entertaining. May even pressed pause on her own career to effectively honour Toni's old rock star gimmick for a while, which went down real well with All Elite's faithful.

Everything changed once Mariah won the 2024 Owen Hart Foundation Cup. She was instantly installed as the number one contender for Storm's AEW Women's Title at All In, then pre-empted an unforgettable title change inside Wembley Stadium by viciously attacking her mentor and Toni's butler Luther. "Watch for the shoe?". Nope, look out for the crimson mask gusher Storm bled on Dynamite.

May's angry facial expressions told the tale of someone who had gone from perfectly angelic to positively horrific, and 'Timeless' Toni didn't even see it coming. Her old timey Hollywood sell job was the kind pro wrestling's past would've cheered - this was a traditional wrasslin' angle for sure, and a bloody good one.

Literally.

It's storylines like this one that piqued WWE's interest in Mariah/Blake. The market leader simply had to have her after watching what Monroe had done as May opposite Storm. Sadly, as previously mentioned, they've failed to do much of anything with Blake beyond NXT's developmental system. Her main roster run has been a washout, but we'll always have that classic Hollywood story to look back on.
