5 Ups & 9 Downs From WWE Raw (Fb 28)

8. Wait, What? Why?

Maybe this is the point, but there was no rhyme or reason to Edge turning heel Monday night and viciously attacking AJ Styles.

Since returning to Raw, Edge has been a straight babyface, even teaming with his wife Beth Phoenix to vanquish Miz and Maryse at Royal Rumble. But a month later, he’s laying out Styles after AJ accepted his WrestleMania challenge.

Oh sure, we’ll probably get an answer next week, but does anyone think an explanation a week later is going to suffice when you’ve got this crack writing team? But again, maybe the point is to get you to tune in next week.

We’ll give this a tepid “down” for now, because Edge actually can be a really good heel, and this could invigorate him and his character. We’ll judge it more thoroughly next week.

One thing hopefully everyone can agree on though: the conchairto shots from Edge were sickening and reinforced the belief that all chair shots to the head should be banned, even these pseudo-protected ones. This feud didn’t need it – at least not like this right away – and after all the stuff about CTE, is it really worth it?

If you can’t build hype and heat for a WrestleMania match without battering a guy’s head with a chair, it’s time to stop booking and hand the pencil to someone else.
