6 Times WWE Got Money In The Bank Winner Wrong
5. John Cena - Money In The Bank 2012
Who Should Have Won - Chris Jericho
Going into the 2012 Money in the Bank pay-per-view, many assumed that the ladder match for the RAW briefcase was going to be terrible. The match was contested only by former WWE Champions, which gave the fans a disappointing line-up. John Cena, Big Show, Kane, Chris Jericho and The Miz competed in the match, which was ultimately won by a very surprised-looking Cena.
In truth, Cena was the only viable candidate to win the match. Big Show and Kane were already irrelevant at this point, whilst Jericho had spent much of the year losing on pay-per-view. The Miz had only just returned to WWE TV, and had next to no momentum.
Even so, this was one of the first briefcases matches that felt like it existed for the sake of itself. Cena won in order to add the match to his list of accomplishments, whilst also setting up a chance for someone to fail to successfully cash in. This was the most box-ticking Money in the Bank ladder match of them all.
It didn't need to be so dreary. Many critics cited Jericho's lack of recent success as a reason for his not winning, but since when has that ever mattered? The opposite is often true with Money in the Bank - the winner is booked poorly going into the event, allowing WWE to 'shock' the audience with the result.
More so than anyone in the history of the match, Chris Jericho deserves to have won it at some point. 2012 was a great opportunity to put the briefcase on Y2J, but instead the win was given to The Face That Runs The Place.
