When Shawn Michaels decided to return to wrestling in 2002 after a four-month absence owing to a serious back injury, one oft he matches everyone wanted to see was HBK versus Kurt Angle. Michaels was considered one of the greatest of the 90s if not ever and Kurt was the rookie sensation who had shot to the top of the wrestling world and become a five-star match machine in just a couple of short years.

It would take take a couple of years for the match to come to fruition, with their rivalry starting at the 2005 Royal Rumble. During the 30-man over-the-top-rope elimination match, Michaels eliminated Angle only for Kurt to return and dump Michaels illegally. With neither man now challenging for the WWE Title at WrestleMania, they were free to collide with one another in an inter-promotional dream match.

Kurt was on form in the buildup, savagely attacking and bloodying Michaels in a powerful angle on Raw before unleashing his comedic side with his 'Sexy Kurt' sendup of The Showstopper, complete with leather chaps and Sherri Martel. Then came time for the match, and the two legends did not disappoint, assembling one for the ages, one of the best in the history of WrestleMania.

Inevitably, there were rematches, with Michaels evening the score in anther belter at Vengeance before they traded wins and losses throughout the autumn and winter months (including a 30-minute Iron Man match at Raw Homecoming). Their styles meshed perfectly and they always gave full effort, making their matches must-watch whenever they went down.
