7 Ground-Breaking Promos That Changed A Career Forever

2. Bret Screwed Bret

Prior to the late 90s, Vince McMahon€™s on-screen role had been limited to commentary and interviews. Fast forward a few years later though, and Mr. McMahon was one of the most prominent features on WWE television and at times the biggest heel on the show. The catalyst for this evolution had been the Montreal Screwjob of 1997. In another fantastic angle incorporating real-life events, Mr. McMahon was revealed as the (legitimate) mastermind behind the decision to rob Bret Hart of the WWE title in his homeland prior to his jump to WCW. In a very professional-looking segment with JR, McMahon discussed the Screwjob in front of the world on Monday Night Raw. The boss candidly and unashamedly claimed that €œBret screwed Bret€, relieving himself from any of the blame. Many saw this as a heinous act of McMahon abusing his abundant power over the WWE product and denying any wrongdoing, and thus a supervillain was instantly born. In the coming years, Mr. McMahon would assume an even more prominent role in on-screen storylines, eventually becoming the leader of the corporation and the epitome of what it means to be an €œevil boss€. Though Stone Cold Steve Austin will go down as the star of the Attitude Era, it certainly takes two to tango. Without the Mr. McMahon character acting as his long-time foe, Austin€™s effectiveness would likely have been lessened. In other words, If Vince had never claimed that €œBret screwed Bret€, Stone Cold, the Attitude Era and the WWE€™s ultimate victory in the Monday Night Wars may never have come about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtvOZ_akgFg
