It's amazing that John Cena has only appeared in one Money In The Bank match to date. Back in 2012, he won the ladder bout to guarantee himself a WWE Title shot, but he hasn't been seen in the multi-man bump fest since. Cena surely would have been involved in this year's MITB had he been on television.

Out of the field who did make it to Money In The Bank, someone like Sami Zayn or Dolph Ziggler would've been the prime candidates to make way for Cena. The fact this didn't happen though helped make the ladder match feel fresh, unpredictable, and prevented John Cena from overshadowing the rise of Baron Corbin.

MITB was Shinsuke Nakamura's first ever ladder match, and also a chance for the underdog Zayn to gain a landmark victory or for Corbin to emerge. Those were the big stories going in, ones aided by Cena being AWOL during the build.
