For years, the WWE has seemed intent on refusing to acknowledge that wrestling exists outside of its own little bubble. But recently, that’s started to change.

Wrestler’s indie pasts are starting to be recognised, companies like Ring of Honor and New Japan are being referenced on Monday Night Raw, and of course the entire premise of the CWC tournament is that it involves guys who aren’t necessarily signed to the WWE.

This trend of recognising there’s a big wide world out there continued on the Bracketology show. Ranallo, in particular, openly referenced the “advent of mixed martial arts”, there was a mention for the Super J Cup in there, and then Ranallo went one better than before by name-dropping UFC in his chat with Triple H.

It’s another intriguing element of this new direction that the WWE seems to be headed towards—and one that makes compete sense really given the growing diversity of the modern wrestling landscape.
