8 Craziest Stories Told On The Joe Rogan Experience
2. Michael Scott Moore's Pirate Ordeal - #1149
Immersive journalism is a crucial aspect of the so-called 'fourth estate'. Those who travel to dangerous areas to shine a light on underreported subjects are putting their lives at risk in order to better inform the wider populace of the world at large; often putting their own safety in serious jeopardy in order to get the story.
Michael Scott Moore's story shows just how harsh the consequences can be for investigative journalists in their field. While researching for a book about modern-day piracy, Moore was captured by pirates in the Somalian city of Galkayo.
The published author Moore describes the lawlessness of the African state in an unsurprisingly eloquent and authoritative manner, explaining to Rogan the political and economic circumstances that led to abductions like his being widespread across the country. Moore also does a great job in explaining the paradoxical relationship he had as a prisoner with the guards that were holding him hostage.
During the more than two years that he was held captive, Moore fascinatingly explains that ways he and his fellow prisoners would interact, developing a multi-lingual pidgin, in order to communicate beyond the barriers of language. He also tells Rogan about how there were several times when he had the opportunity to grab an unattended loaded rifle and the various internal debates he had deciding what to do, knowing that any attempt to escape would be suicide but growing increasingly hopeless about his chances of release.
