AEW's Continental Classic has become one of the most fun events on the pro wrestling calendar. Spectacular matches are played out on every AEW show for around 6-8 weeks every year, as reputations are put on the line, stars are made, and seeds are planted for future storylines. Khan's love for NJPW's G1 Climax and PWG's Battle of Los Angeles are well documented, and now AEW has its own tournament that fans and the man himself can take pride in.

To set this in motion, the inaugural 12-man Continental Classic in 2023 needed to hit the ground running, and Eddie Kingston provided its biggest spark. Kingston's "no bullshit" approach to wrestling bleeds into his promos, matches, and credibility, and his road to becoming the first winner of the Continental Classic captured everything that makes him a hero to fans.

Eating early losses to Brody King and a gut-wrenching defeat to Bryan Danielson, Kingston defeated lifelong enemy Claudio Castagnoli to stay alive in the tournament. He then beat Daniel Garcia and Andrade in emotionally draining matches to set up a return encounter with Bryan Danielson at World's End 2023. He then (finally) defeated 'The American Dragon' in a legendary semi-final, before besting his friend/enemy Jon Moxley in the final to complete a classic underdog story. It showcased the greatness of tournament wrestling, and Kingston's victory established the Continental Classic as one of AEW's most unmissable events.
