As the story goes, Vince McMahon wouldn't tell Ted DiBiase about the 'Million Dollar Man' character until Teddy signed on the dotted line and committed his future to the WWF. When Pat Patterson said Vince's idea would be a good one, DiBiase obliged and became a privileged, cash-obsessed heel.

McMahon didn't want him to stop when the cameras did.

DiBiase had one of the best deals in all of wrestling. He ate in the best restaurants, flew first class around the world, had a chauffeur-driven limousine, drank the most expensive champagnes and wore the finest clothes. Ted literally lived his gimmick, and that was non-negotiable. To Vince, it was the difference between fans treating DiBiase with contempt around the clock and simply booing him like any other heel on TV.

Vince advised that his 'Million Dollar Man' live a lavish lifestyle, and personally paid for all of DiBiase's extravagant expenses on the road. It was a career-changing idea, one that turned Ted from workmanlike wrestler into tailor made star.
