8 Ups & 1 Down From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (July 17)
3. RIP Team Hell No
In the hands of almost any other performer, The Miz's funeral for Team Hell No would've come off terribly. We'd be talking about it as another Bobby Lashley's sisters/Bayley: This Is Your Life, comparing it to Vince Russo's WCW, and using it to mock WWE's creative team for months to come. It speaks volumes of 'The A-Lister's' performance skills that we won't be doing that, because he helped transform what could've been a tragic segment into something excellent.
Miz delivered a full ceremony, with ushers, a funeral dirge, and a mannequin head with Kane's mask sat on a cushion (he should've probably brought an urn, though). He used the elaborate set-up as a means to bury 'The Big Red Machine,' Daniel Bryan, their relationship, and the Extreme Rules loss to The Bludgeon Brothers, with Bryan, of course, the main focus.
Calling the former General Manager a "sad, sad man," Miz claimed his return had been nothing but a legacy-destroying bust, and this drew Daniel from the back. He ran wild, jumping Miz from behind, before battering his goons with Busaiku knee kicks and suplexes, then closing with a staredown.
This was all about building towards their eventual match. Not that their rivalry needs any extra heat, but the angle generated plenty, and we may now see them collide at SummerSlam.
