5. Comeuppance For Jordan Devlin
The previous night had established Pete Dunne as the tournament's chief antagonist, but Jordan Devlin wasn't far behind him. Finn Balor's dastardly protege pulled a mid-match heel turn on Danny Burch, took advantage of some sloppy officiating to win, then attacked him post-match. In under ten minutes, Devlin had gone from milquetoast babyface to one of the most detestable heels in the building, and he faced the tournament's most affable competitor last night.
Devlin vs. Tyler Bate was another fun match. You knew it was going to be intense from the moment Bate rejected a handshake to twirl his moustache, and that's exactly how it went down. Devlin almost won it by countering the Tyler Driver 97 into a Hurricanrana, but Bate pulled through, and the Tyler Driver put his opponent away in the end.
This was a clear step-up for Devlin, who, heelish antics aside, didn't exactly impress in the ring during his round one match. For Bate, this was confirmation of his greatness. His match with Tucker was comfortably the best match of the first round, and he looked calm, confident, and composed while working with Devlin. With (potentially) two matches still to go, however, his night had only just begun...
