8 Wrestlers John Cena Didn't Bury
3. AJ Styles
When AJ Styles stepped into a WWE ring for the first ever time at the Royal Rumble in January, it was a surreal moment. The TNA poster boy turned New Japan icon was long considered one of the best (if not the best) wrestlers on the planet but, for whatever reason, WWE never seemed interested.
That all changed on the back of his stunning work in Japan and Styles looked like a star from the first moment he stepped through the curtain to perform for the WWE audience. It took WWE a few months to catch up and realise just how big a star they had on their hands, but within mere months with the company, AJ was one of the biggest names on the roster.
It was inevitable then that he would square off with John Cena and when the two faced each other in a dream match at Money in the Bank, it was as great as we hoped it would be. That is, apart from the finish. Gallows and Anderson interfered to help AJ pin Cena and, once again, it looked like a star's momentum would stall because of WWE's insistence on Super Cena not losing clean.
Then Summerslam rolled around and all that changed. In a tremendous match, Styles picked up the clean win with the Phenomenal Forearm to become 'the face that runs the place'. The next month, Styles won the WWE title from Dean Ambrose to solidify his status as the top guy in WWE today.
