8 WWE Superstars With Untapped Heel Potential

4. Dean Ambrose

The Shield were heels for much of their destructive original run, but Ambrose has played a face since the break up of the group. He has flirted with the anti-hero tweener role, but has yet to fully embrace a darker persona that would no doubt suit him.

Ambrose originally came to the attention of WWE as sadistic bad guy Jon Moxley, a character which he took with him to the FCW development territory in everything but name. While preparing for his main roster call-up, Ambrose was the heel in feuds with Seth Rollins and William Regal, and even began working an angle with Mick Foley which was supposed to result in his debut on RAW before the concept of The Shield was discussed.

It appeared as though WWE were continuing to invest in Ambrose’s future as a heel when they made him the initial leader and main spokesperson for The Shield, before Vince McMahon identified Roman Reigns as the breakout star prior to the faction’s split.

Although Ambrose’s face run has seen him become the youngest Grand Slam champion in WWE history (WWE, Tag Team and Intercontinental or US champion) his ‘Lunatic Fringe’ character had become stale before his recent reunion with Rollins. WWE has dropped him from the main-event scene and he won’t return there anytime soon under this gimmick.

When Ambrose and Rollins separate again, WWE should have the former turn on his brother, beginning his ascent to the top-level heel that WWE once hoped he would be.
