Terry Funk is a God among men.

One of the most respected workers of all-time, the hardcore icon was beloved by mainstream and lifelong wrestling fans alike. This has to be repeated, because nobody has retired and returned more times than 'The Funker'. It's almost a meme how many times Funk went on record as saying he was giving up in-ring competition, with at least 8 notable retirements before he finally called it a day.

The most famous of these was captured on 1999's classic flick 'Beyond The Mat'.

Funk's entire story centred around his 1997 retirement match against Bret Hart at WrestleFest in Texas. The documentary even included footage of his first retirement from 1983 in Japan, in which he passionately shouted "FOREVER!" again and again. The movie ended by declaring that Funk was back wrestling just 3 months after his retirement bout with The Hitman.

There were retirement matches against Sabu in 1999, Tommy Dreamer in 2011 and Jerry Lawler in 2015. His final official bout took place in 2017, as Funk teamed with the Rock N' Roll Express against Jerry Lawler, Brian Christopher and Doug Gilbert for BTW in South Carolina.
