9 Best WCW Luchadores

The best of the mid-90s Mexican invasion!

WCW had a lot of big-name stars during the Monday Night Wars. They needed to have significant star power to compete with Vince McMahon and the WWF, and it was stars like Hollywood Hulk Hogan, Sting, Macho Man Randy Savage, Goldberg and Ric Flair that helped tip the balance in their favour for 84 consecutive weeks.

But viewers were not tuning in solely for the big stars, who generally wrestled in poor matches and spent most of their time droning on in long promos. While the big stars might have brought eyes towards the product, those eyes stayed glued to WCW thanks to a supremely talented undercard.

A big part of that was WCW's trailblazing Cruiserweight division, which featured some of the best wrestling talent under 220lbs from America, Japan and, of course, Mexico. It was the stars of lucha libre, largely pilfered from top promotion AAA, who were the stars of the show.

The weekly exploits of the nWo may have been keeping people invested but it was the high-flying, daredevile antics of the cruiserweights, particularly those from south of the border, that kept people hooked.

The WCW luchadores are often bunched in together under one umbrella but, quite frankly, I think that's rather unfair. So I've re-watched a lot of random midcard matches from Nitro in order to present the 9 best.
