9 Most Anticlimactic Unmaskings In Wrestling History

2. Impostor Kane (Part 1)

Not to be confused with the "Fake Kane" storyline that would happen a few years later with The Undertaker stepping into The Big Red Machine's gear, the Imposter Kane angle was much, much less fruitful.

The persistent rumor has been that Glenn Jacobs was strongly considering retiring from wrestling to focus on a film career. To allow the character to live on in his absence - because God forbid the WWE just let a popular gimmick die - they brought in Luke Gallows aka Festus aka Drew Hankinson to put on the red suit and mask.

It was going to be revealed that Hankinson was the real Kane, who'd somehow been locked away by this imposter we'd been watching all these years. It was utterly ridiculous, and thankfully Jacobs had a change of heart about retiring, though this led to a necessary rewrite of the storyline.

How do they explain this "new" version of Kane now that the "old" Kane is going to be sticking around? They...don't. Instead, they had the two Kanes confront each other, with the fight spilling into the back of the arena. After getting the upper hand, the "old" Kane manages to rip this imposter's mask off and then promptly toss him through some double doors, never to be seen again.

Not only did we not get a good look at the imposter's face, the whole thing quickly dissolved into a gigantic, lingering question mark everyone tried to forget about.
