Hogan-Sting at Starrcade '97 was a great occasion - and without question one of the defining moments of World Championship Wrestling - but it wasn't necessarily a great wrestling match.

Even as a brief stop on the New World Order timeline, you can't really say that it accomplished its stated aims. The ending was botched to such an extent that Bret Hart ended up counting a dubious do-over for the face, even though Hogan - the most dastardly of all bad guys - had already sealed what looked to be a perfectly legitimate title defence, cancelled out because of a fast-count that was actually slow.

As a result, Sting - although he technically emerged as champion - ultimately bought himself no more credibility as the man to bring down the nWo - and, to compound things, the Hitman's maiden WCW appearance fell as flat as a pancake too.

The event's buyrate proved that the WCW creative team got things right in the build-up, but for fans at least, the pay-off will forever go down as one of the great examples of ego and politics getting in the way of what could have been wrestling dynamite.
