9 Times WWE Booked Impromptu Matches At WrestleMania
3. A Main Event Under Normal Circumstances
On paper, John Cena versus the Undertaker would be an easy call for a major PLE match, a main-event clash between era-defining superstars.
But at WrestleMania 34, the match was little more than a three-minute squash gag.
Cena had failed in his attempts to secure a world title match via the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber, so he began calling out Undertaker on Raw repeatedly, to no avail. Without an answer, Cena decided to attend Mania “as a fan.”
On the night, Cena sat in the crowd, hanging out with the fans until a referee told him that 'Taker had arrived. Cena sprinted to the back and would make his entrance later in the evening. After a confrontation with Elias, Cena was stymied by Undertaker effectively un-retiring (he left his jacket and hat in the ring after his disaster of a match at WrestleMania 33, and the hat and coat reappeared here).
Instead of a competitive surprise match, the Deadman pummelled Cena, who managed the barest of offense before being chokeslammed, Tombstoned and pinned. Just like that, a WrestleMania dream match was over. Bell to bell, the match was shorter than Taker’s entrance.
