Jeff Hardy and Edge had a task ahead of them.

For their World Heavyweight Championship confrontation at Extreme Rules, the two were pitted in a one-on-one ladder match. WWE hyped this match up as the climax to a decades-long rivalry in which they and others made innovations with ladder matches in ways that have never been topped since. The problem with the match itself is twofold: one, it was the PG era by this point, so Edge and Hardy were a bit stifled, and two, because of those innovations, one-on-one ladder matches had lost their lustre and looked a bit mediocre compared to the crazy multi-man spotfests fans had been treated to for years now.

Still, Edge and Hardy do pull off some fun sequences, and the match certainly doesn’t drag. It just was never going to live up to its own hype simply because of its circumstances.

And of course, the real reason anyone remembers this match is because after Jeff wins, CM Punk cashes in his Money in the Bank briefcase and becomes World Heavyweight Champion, sparking his eventual heel turn.

If you wanna see this moment again, by all means, watch the preceding 20 minutes, but that cash-in is the only true notable moment.
