All WWE Horror Movies Ranked Worst To... Less Bad

2. Oculus

A lot of horror fans regard Oculus as WWE Studios' best horror movie, and they're almost right except for one main issue.

Casual viewers may not know that Oculus is actually an adaptation of director Mike Flanagan's own low-budget short film.

The original short follows a Creepypasta-style narrative in which a man exposits some lore about a sentient mirror before ultimately becoming its next victim. Oculus adapts much of this narrative faithfully, lifting several minutes of Karen Gillan's early dialogue almost directly from the original.

This would be fine if Oculus were simply an expansion of a tighter narrative, but that's not quite the case. With only one actor and one setting to drive the story, the original short takes an exposition-heavy approach that doesn't translate so well to a feature-length film.

It seems senseless that an adaptation with recognizable talent and enough budget to show us the mirror's backstory would instead choose to simply narrate it across several minutes of stagnant footage.

That said, the film's scares are still fairly unique, and Gillan succeeds at keeping your interest in a largely unlikable protagonist. It's debatable whether Oculus should rank among the best or most original horror movies overall, but it's still worlds better than most of the films on this list.
