Mick Foley is the epitome of someone who never should have been WWE Champion, but was able to ascend thanks to his skill and connection to the fans. Mankind first won the WWF Championship on RAW in 1999, and it was one of the most iconic and beloved moments in the show’s history. From there, he would continue his feud with The Rock over the title which saw him lose it, gain it back, and ultimately lose it for good. However, he received one more world title in August when he defeated Austin and Triple H in a triple threat at SummerSlam.

Unfortunately, that reign would only last a day, as Helmsley defeated him on RAW. Mankind’s title reigns were never meant to be lengthy, being instead tokens of appreciation to Foley. However, the symbolic value of those victories make his time as champion all the more special. Mick Foley as WWE Champion signified that anyone could become world champion if they were in the right place, the right time, and they had a connection with the crowd. The likes of CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, and Jeff Hardy had Mrs. Foley’s baby boy to thank for starting the trend.
