What’s interesting about The Undertaker’s reigns as WWE Champion in the '90s is that each of his wins came in a different eras. First, he defeated Hulk Hogan during the tail-end of Hulkamania. Six years later, he dethroned Sid at WrestleMania 13 just as the New Generation era was transitioning into the Attitude Era, and finally, in 1999, he defeated Steve Austin during the height of Attitude. Those different eras also mean the Undertaker won with three different eras as his character. In 1991, he was still the spooky giant zombie, in 1997, he was the more humanized Lord of Darkness, and in 1999, he was full-on Buffy-esque Ministry of Darkness leader.

The problem with the Undertaker’s reigns is that despite being one of the most pushed and protected characters in history, he was never groomed to be the company-carrying world champion. So all of his world title reigns felt transitional in nature, and he never had compelling feuds when he held the belt for an extended period. Still, given its the Undertaker, winning the championship three times in three different eras is nothing to snuff at.
