Intercontinental Champion Gunther changed everything, not least including the expectations of just about every wrestling fan that assumed he stood no chance on WWE's notoriously complex main roster.

He changed the perception of the longstanding secondary title approximately 20 years after every titleholder that came before him promised to. It became a gnawing cliche for each new holder to invoke Mr Perfect, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels, but through the sheer quality of the former Walter's defences were showing rather than telling.

As of this writing, he looks set to make it official too - he's agonisingly close to holding it longer than the Honky Tonk Man did between 1987 and 1988, giving him the chance to be labelled the greatest of all time by definition as well as overwhelming evidence.
