5. Fatal 4 Way: John Cena Vs. Shawn Michaels Vs. Edge Vs. Randy Orton (Backlash 2007)
Orton and Edge teamed up in 2006 (coining themselves "Team Rated-RKO"), primarily to feud with De-Generation X. After Triple H got injured in early 2007, Orton and Edge unfortunately floundered a little, with both stars ending up in the Money In The Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 23. The main event that night was John Cena retaining his WWE Championship against Shawn Michaels. Throwing most of Raw's main event stars into the mix, the company decided to have a four way the following month with Cena taking on Shawn and Team Rated-RKO. The dynamics of the match work really well because early on Edge and Orton started fighting and it became clear the match really was every man for himself. There were numerous points throughout the match where Rated-RKO worked together but, more often than not, Edge ended up turning on Randy. Meanwhile, Cena and Michaels constantly battled with anyone they could to try and score a pinfall. Fatal four ways can sometimes just be placeholder matches but in this one, you had four stars at the top of their game all going balls-to-the-wall to steal the show, going full throttle for twenty minutes and captivating the crowd in the process. The match had a beautiful finishing sequence, with Edge spearing Orton but then walking into an FU and, as Cena turned round, The Heartbreak Kid superkicked the champion on top of the Legend Killer, with Cena simply falling on him and scoring the win. The final moments came across like the luck of the draw as to who was just opportunistic enough (and had the most fortunate timing) to win the match. As four ways go, this is one of the best WWE have ever produced and Orton was on point throughout.
