It had been six long years since we had seen a wedding in the WWF, but at SummerSlam 1991 fans were in for a treat...well, fans who enjoyed paying to watch two people get married that is.

Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth had already been hitched in real life at that point for a few years, but Vince McMahon wanted a little bit of an extra hook for his show of the summer. In the storyline, wrestling’s most beloved couple had got back together a few months earlier at WrestleMania after being apart for a few years. Nothing could stop their passionate love for one another!

At SummerSlam, Gorilla Monsoon, Roddy Piper and Bobby Heenan commented on the festivities, with Heenan really getting under his co-host's skin. Savage and Elizabeth went all out on their attire, and it's a shame Savage's tux and feather hat haven't become an industry staple. Even though the ceremony was over-the-top, it’s still easily the classiest wedding we’ve seen so far in the business. It's hard not to mark out for love itself when the Macho Man belts out an “OOOOOO yeah!” when asked if he’d take Elizabeth as his bride.

However, the live crowd didn’t get the good stuff from this angle. Sure, the wedding was nice, but the reception with Elizabeth opening up a venomous Snake from Jake Roberts, and The Undertaker knocking out Savage with an urn was all kinds of fantastic. Fans had to wait to see this shocking footage on the WWF’s syndicated programming, but it made the entire angle even better.

The pageantry and the emotions on display from that night helped create the most iconic wedding we’ve seen so far in wrestling. This is going to be a tough one to ever beat.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
