Ultimately meaningless after Roman Reigns' march to WrestleMania ended in disaster yet again, 2018's battle for the right to fight Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania did more harm than good despite another spirited effort in the new structure.

Seth Rollins and Finn Bálor were permitted high spots and hope spots alike before Braun Strowman's own charge to failure, as WWE tried and failed to serve as many masters as possible across the middling 40 minute war.

'The Monster Among Men' steamrolled the entire field in a dominant 15 minutes before 'The Big Dog' rose from certain doom to claim the victory in something resembling a payoff to a programme that had lingered in the background for the better part of the year. High on action but low on stunts, this felt like a match that had to happen rather than because anybody (wrestlers or fans) particularly wanted it to.

The lack of direction for every other wrestler in the match in the immediate aftermath was damning too - neither WWE nor the performers themselves appeared to have a Plan B once Roman's fate was assured.
