Where: NXT 2.0: New Year’s Evil (4 January 2022).

There's no need for a Cruiserweight division in 2022.

75% of WWE's current roster would've qualified for the Cruiser ranks years ago, and there's a general stigma that comes with the title anyway. Therefore, it was pleasing to see creative take steps away from a lightweight belt at NXT's New Year's Evil this past January.

There, reigning North American Champion Carmelo Hayes defeated then-Cruiserweight Champ Roderick Strong in a pulsating 15-minute battle. The pair were trusted to open the episode with a bang, and they did just that. Together, they delivered something everyone could be proud of and got shot of the pesky Cruiser tag in the process.

NXT never needed that title in the first place. Having a World, Women's, Tag-Team and secondary prize like the North American was always more than enough. Goodbye Cruiserweight - let's hope you don't make a comeback anytime soon.
