1. Royal Rumble 2021
Most WWE fans will concur that the Rumble is the best night of the year, but it also felt liek the show most likely to be blighted by current circumstances. It lives and dies on pops, fan participation, crazy surprises. Was it going to be the same in the empty Thunderdome?
Well, no, but it was still really good. The titular matches, while no all time classics, were both smashing fun, offering a taste of the new (Belair) and the old (Edge) in terms of their winners. The mens’ match especially had a wide open field, with half a dozen or more believable victors.
The internet was spared a meltdown when Drew mowed down Goldberg in an effective opener, and Sasha/Carmella round two was another solid (if predictable) clash. Reigns and Owens, meanwhile, tore the place apart in a spectacular, spot-filled Falls Count Anywhere match that suffered an unfortunate botched finish but still completely succeeded.
It was a relief to see the Rumble come off without a hitch in such strange times, but more than anything else it was great fun in its own right, fans or no.
