Rebooking WWE SummerSlam 2003: 7 Ways To Make It Better
2. Goldberg Vs. Kane - No.1 Contender For The World Heavyweight Championship
SummerSlam 2003 should have been Goldberg's night. All signs pointed to him emerging from the Elimination Chamber match as World Heavyweight Champion. SummerSlam marked the first time he had looked like the real Goldberg since debuting in the company in April. Cutting through the competition with high octane power moves, he looked every bit the star that he had in WCW. The fan response was positive and it seemed implausible that he wouldn't be crowned champ. Unfortunately, then-champion Triple H entered the Chamber with a serious groin muscle and could barely walk, let alone wrestle. So WWE booked the finish they did, with The Game hitting Da Man with a cheap slegehammer shot and retaining. Triple H shouldn't have been wrestling that night...so in this version, he won't be! Instead, Goldberg will go up against the rampaging Kane. The Big Red Machine recently turned heel and began destroying everyone from Rob Van Dam to Linda McMahon and Jim Ross. Kane would logically want revenge, and a title shot, against Triple H, since it was he who beat him, leading to his unmasking. This would be a powerful big man match, but it wouldn't be booked to go too long, like a lot of Goldberg's WWE matches were (it was not his strong suit). Instead, this one would be wrapped up in about ten minutes, with Goldberg coming out on top, due to interference from either Rob Van Dam or Shane McMahon (or both).
