Rey Mysterio Vs. Seth Rollins Universal Title Match Confirmed

Rey Mysterio won big on last night's WWE Raw.

Rey Mysterio has earned himself a WWE Universal Title shot at 44 years old.

The lucha legend accomplished this by winning a pre-advertised five-way elimination match for number one contendership. An exciting bout unfolded with Shinsuke Nakamura eliminated first, before United States Champion AJ Styles put his old rival, 'The King Of Strong Style' down, followed closely by AJ's own elimination by Robert Roode's hand.

Mysterio hadn't scored a fall up to that point, but worked an exciting series of back-and-forth exchanges with Roode before eventually hitting his 619 and springboard splash for a cathartic victory. Really, the match's only downside was Michael Cole's constant reminders of how old Rey is.

Rey will now go head-to-head with Seth Rollins on next week's Raw "season premiere." The duo have never wrestled a singles bout before, so if you want to throw the "first-time dream match" label at it, go right ahead.

It makes perfect sense as a fill-in defence for Rollins ahead of Hell In A Cell, where he'll face Bray Wyatt's Fiend. Mysterio can still go, it's a fresh piece of booking, and it's hard to imagine them underwhelming.
