Given that The Undertaker recently confirmed the long-standing rumour that he was genuinely sitting behind the curtain at WrestleMania XIV, ready to do whatever was necessary to make sure business was done that night, it was a good job that The Headliner did the job to Steve Austin as planned.

As is well documented, Shawn was in a bad way, physically and mentally, going into The Granddaddy Of Them All, and concerns abounded that he would be unable to locate his smile or come down with a bad case of backstage politics before the 'Mania main event. Due to those issues, HBK and Austin didn't have a show-stealing match, but given the circumstances of Michaels' injury, it was a fine encounter.

More importantly, it acted as a turning point for The Showstopper.

Had he never come back, it would have been a giant shame if Shawn had tried to pull some shady business, and who knows what 'Taker would have done at that moment. What we ended up with was a clean transition into Austin's period of dominance, and a door left open at Titan Towers for The Heartbreak Kid to walk back through in a few years.
