You're not going to believe this, but Matt Riddle wasn't telling the truth when he claimed WWE had plans for him to win its 2022 men's Royal Rumble.

The new NJPW star claimed earlier this week that he was set to win Royal Rumble 2022 until Brock Lesnar, whom nobody wanted to stand up to, decided he didn't want to do business before winning the bout himself. This has now been rubbished.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that at no point was Riddle seriously considered to win the 2022 Rumble. Meltzer also added that Riddle's claims that WWE wanted him to win that year's Money in the Bank contract were false too. Although Matt's assertion that Austin Theory's victory was a last-minute call was correct, nobody was "100%" locked in to win before this - including Riddle.

Brock won the 2022 Royal Rumble, ultimately facing Roman Reigns in a match to unify the WWE and Universal Championships as one Undisputed strap at WrestleMania 38.

WWE released Riddle in September 2023, doing so amidst multiple controversies surrounding the former Raw star, who has since appeared for NJPW.
