The End Of Rey Mysterio In WWE Is Coming Sooner Than You Think (WWE News)
Icon expected to wind down epic in-ring career sooner than WWE fans might want.
WrestleVotes on Fightful Select is reporting that legendary star Rey Mysterio could be set to call it a career in 2027. Backstage sources within WWE told the website that everything "pointed towards next year marking the end of the road for Rey Mysterio as an active wrestler".
If true, then he's going out on a high - Mysterio has experienced one hell of a career renaissance in recent years following a remarkable recovery in physical form. Remember, his knees looked positively knackered more than a decade ago, and yet here he is still entering tidy performances most weeks.
The same source tells WrestleVotes/Fightful that Rey Rey will likely made the same transition from in-ring to behind the scenes as fellow retiree AJ Styles. Mysterio is also expected to help with developing younger talent in both WWE and AAA, which would be a solid role for him.
As someone looking back on a timeless 30+ year career, Rey certainly has a wealth of experience to impart. He'd come in super handy behind the curtain, and it's clear just from the outside looking in that he's well-liked by pretty much everybody.
Back to the Fightful write-up. They say that "WWE has discussed ideas on how to present his farewell".
From a fan's perspective, it'd be lovely if Mysterio was able to go out with one more massive match. He doesn't need another title run at this stage in the game, but a hot feud and series of bouts peaking with a memorable retirement blowoff sounds like the best course of action.
Fingers crossed on that.
