Booker T was a four-time, four-time, four-time, four-time WCW Champion before Vince McMahon purchased his contract as part of the WCW purchase in early 2001, but he was not used particularly well once in WWF. His atrocious first title defense on Raw against Buff Bagwell might have had something to do with that, but he floundered both during and after the Invasion Angle, dropping the WCW Title to The Rock, forming a makeshift tag teams with Test and Goldust, and feuding with (and losing to) Steve Austin and Edge. In the buildup to WrestleMania XIX, Booker won a Battle Royal to face Triple H for the World Championship, but lost the match and a lot of momentum following. He added an Intercontinental Title victory and a US Title win after WrestleMania XIX, but seemed to be treading-water until mid-2006. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUQR_h19kN4 Smackdown! general manager Teddy Long decided to resurrect the King of the Ring tournament as a Smackdown! exclusive event, with preliminary matches taking place on the show and the finals to be held at the 2006 Judgement Day pay-per-view. Booker T defeated Matt Hardy and Kurt Angle (by forfeit) before facing Bobby Lashley at Judgement Day; a shillelagh shot from Finlay helped Booker win the tournament, the crown, and the new moniker "King Booker." And Booker embraced the title, adding the cape, the crown, an incredible English accent, and a Royal Court of William Regal and Finlay. He'd occasionally slip into his "real voice" when angered, but always found his way back to his royal English accent. And while King Booker failed to wrest the US Title away from Bobby Lashley, he did defeat Rey Mysterio at the Great American Bash for his first- and only- WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
