The WWE SummerSlam 2016 Card Fans Wanted (But Didn't Get)

Eight months ago, a main event between Roman Reigns and John Cena was almost a sure-thing for SummerSlam. Reigns was on his way to a second, consecutive WrestleMania main event and Cena would be back from a debilitating injury in time for the two to wage war in Brooklyn.

On the biggest stage of the summer, Reigns would have the opportunity to prove himself as the face of the company by knocking off the man he hoped to supplant. It was as simple a story to tell as any and one that would have led to electric crowd responses.

Cena's drafting to SmackDown and Reigns' placement on Raw, not to mention the latter's suspension, left fans with main event matches completely different from those originally expected.

Reigns and Cena, the two biggest stars at the beginning of 2016, now take their places on the undercard of a team headlined by Dolph Ziggler, Dean Ambrose, Finn Balor, Seth Rollins and Randy Orton.

Proving once and for all that eight months is an eternity in the world of professional wrestling.
