UFC Fighter Colby Covington Expresses Interest In Joining WWE
The former UFC welterweight champion hypes up potential jump to WWE next year.
With his over-the-top persona, habit of making provocative statements, and love of Kurt Angle's entrance theme; UFC welterweight Colby Covington seems like he would be a perfect match for the world of sports entertainment. And the man himself wouldn't disagree.
On an April 9th interview on SB Nation's "What the Heck" show posted on YouTube, Covington expressed entrance in working for WWE, and even revealed he'd been honing his wrestling talents in his spare time. "I've been practicing moves and really working on my promo and mic skills and just control and slowing things down and understanding the art of wrestling," he said. Asked for a time frame of his professional wrestling debut, he said "Probably 2021. Not this summer, but next summer. I want to make sure when I go there I make the biggest splash possible because I'm not here for a long time, I'm here for a good time, and I'm not here to make friends, I'm here to make money. When I go over there, I want to make Brink's truckloads of money"
This wouldn't be the former interim UFC Welterweight Champion's first time in a wrestling ring. Back in 2017, he and other American Top Team members made several appearances for Impact Wrestling, where they aligned themselves with Lashley (a former ATT member) and King Mo, and defeated the team of Moose and Stephan Bonnar at the Bound for Glory pay-per-view. Covington also made a solo appearance at a February 2018 WrestlePro pro event, where he defeated TyQuil Woodley, a parody character of UFC rival Tyron Woodley.
In the interview, Covington expressed his admiration for WWE's workers, calling them "some of the hardest workers on earth. To put on a show like that for the world while everybody’s at home watching, you don’t have the same energy from the crowd and the same adrenaline that you get when you walk into a full arena, so to see those guys out there putting it all on the line, I respect those guys." He continued that he wanted to "make wrestling real again. I want people to get behind it and think that it’s real. You ain’t going off the top rope on me because I’ll take you out with a double leg, you ain’t gonna get up there."
If he follows through, Covington will be joining his fellow UFC alumni Brock Lesnar, Ronda Rousey, Matt Riddle, and Cain Velasquez.
