7. Lower Card Divisions
So far, we've looked at ways to characterise the wrestlers a little more and what they can do in the ring. But ultimately, its all for nothing if they don't have anything to compete for. Currently in the WWE, there's five championships, which somehow equates to four divisions. There's the recently unified WWE World Heavyweight Championship, which the crème de la crème compete for. The Divas Championship, which the wrestlers equipped with ovaries compete for. There's the Tag Team Championship, which the wrestlers who brought a buddy with them compete for, and lastly there's the Intercontinental and United States Championships, which everyone else competes for. And it just seems..... very BLAND. Basic. To be honest, the way they treat the US title, there might as well be only four championships. Four! In a company that has a good 80 active wrestlers at any one time, at the very least. So if we assume that every belt gets defended on a regular basis (which they aren't) there's the champion who has one, maybe two rivals for each belt. That leaves over 60% of your roster twiddling their thumbs in the back, doing nothing of consequence. It's wasteful. So more championships seems like a sensible way to go to give the lower card something to do. But what? The much loved Hardcore Championship with its 24/7 rule seems a bit pointless in this kiddy friendly, bloodless era in which we live. And WWE, for whatever reason, has never seemed fully invested in a Light Heavyweight/Cruiserweight division, despite how popular its always been. TNA's X Division proved a key selling point by keeping the high flying action while ditching the antiquated weight restriction, which could be a good route to go down in future. WCW and TNA had a Cruiserweight and Knockouts tag team division for added fun, so these could all be food for thought. WWE, if you don't want to rip off ideas from elsewhere, then use your own intellectual property. You have enough international talent on your books now, so why not make the US Title just for Americans to compete for, and the rest of us dirty foreigners compete for the Intercontinental Title? Before it was NXT, the developmental territory FCW had the FCW 15 Championship which was always competed for in 15 minute ironman matches, so why not bring that back, maybe for the more technical wrestlers? And of course, there's the biggest potential goldmine you're sitting on....
