WWE: 9 Awesome Tag Teams That Never Won The Belts

1. The Rockers

The Rockers Michaels Jannetty Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty were probably the most successful of the last 30 years to not win the WWF tag team titles. We all know how great Shawn Michaels was/is but Marty was no slouch himself and, together, the team was a formidable combination. The Rockers actually started as the Midnight Rockers in the AWA, where Verne Gagne was hesitant to let the team use that name because he was worried fans would think they were rocking chairs (yes, that actually happened). In fact, Jannetty and Michaels were not rocking chairs but did become the hottest babyface team in the territory, defeating Doug Somers and Buddy Rose for the AWA tag team titles in 1987. After being brought into the WWF and then immediately fired because of their partying lifestyle, the Rockers cleaned up their act in 1989 and were brought back by Vince McMahon. They engaged in a house show run against the Brain Busters (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard) that had fans going crazy. A January 1989 match between the two teams was named one of the 50 best matches in the PWI 10th anniversary issue. There was no denying the popularity of the team and, in October 1990, the Rockers actually defeated Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart to capture the WWF tag team titles. However, the top rope broke during the match, causing Bret Hart to have a hissy fit and necessitating that the match be heavily edited before it could be shown on TV. In the meantime, the Rockers actually defended the tag titles against Power and Glory before the decision was made not to air the tag title match at all. In his book, Shawn Michaels claims that the Hart Foundation used their political power backstage to keep the titles but Bret Hart disputes that. Whatever the case, the match was stricken from history and the WWF maintained that the Rockers had never won the tag titles. That broken rope match can actually be seen in its entirety on the Shawn Michaels DVD set that came out a few years ago. As popular as the team was, backstage power or not, there was no reason for the Rockers not to hold the tag titles at least once. Shawn Michaels has gone on to become a legend in wrestling, performing unbelievably in big match after big match. However, you know there's a little part of him who wishes he held the tag titles at least once with Marty Jannetty.
