WWE: Ranking Bret Hart's 14 Matches At WrestleMania

1. WrestleMania 13 vs. Steve Austin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZkK55HFUDU The best way to describe the match is to say that it was a wild brawl that made a lot of sense. They started by going into the crowd, brawling into the stands and going at a very fast paced for 22 minutes. You didn't see rest holds or moments where the action could ever be called boring. It was full of action from the minute the bell rang to the time when referee Ken Shamrock called for the bell. One of the big parts of the story was Austin's blood loss during the match. He was cut open after Bret threw him into the steel railing at ringside. Once Austin got back to his feet, he was busted open and bleeding as much as anybody has ever bled in a wrestling match. It was everywhere. The blood didn't bother him because he kept fighting. That's what the fans loved about him. He was relentless. Towards the end of the match, there was a big spot as Austin was choking Hart with a cable and then Hart ended up grabbing the ring bell and struck Austin in the head with it. That led to the very memorable finishing sequence. Bret put Austin in the Sharpshooter and sat on it pretty good. Austin shook his head in the "Oh hell no" manner as Shamrock asked him if he submits. The crowd was on its feet as blood dripped down Austin's face. Bret fell face first as the crowd popped and the announcers believed Austin had broken the hold. However, Bret still had a hold of him so he cranked on the Sharpshooter again as Austin reached for the ropes and failed in an attempt to break free. Austin went for one last push, but he could not find the strength so he passed out. Shamrock asked very loudly: "Steve, do you give up?" Austin didn't answer it, so Shamrock rang the bell and Hart won. Post match is where the wrestling magic really happened. Bret wanted to attack Austin some more, but Shamrock pulled him off. Bret left the ring angrily as the crowd started to boo him because of his actions. Meanwhile, Austin ended up giving a Stunner to ref Mike Chioda. The crowd loved it! Austin hobbled to the back as the crowd chanted "Austin! Austin!" and it was a sign of things to come. There was not a point in the match where the action slowed down. It was 20 minutes of pure action. It never got boring. Every move they did made sense. Hart was incredible as the aggressive veteran that took it to Austin and showed no remorse doing so. They really got over the idea that Bret didn't care about what the fans thought about his tactics. All he wanted to do was win. Austin showed the kind of heart you want to see out of any babyface even though he wasn't a traditional kind of babyface. When he made his comeback the crowd was totally behind him because they saw him take a tremendous beating and he kept on coming back. It was a simple story of a guy showing a lot of heart, that kept on fighting and earned the respect of everybody watching the match. The "never say die" attitude of Stone Cold is what made him the huge draw he would become. Without this match at WrestleMania 13 who knows if he would have ever reached that level. That's why I always say this was one of the most important matches in the history of WWE. Over the years, both Hart and Austin have talked about how this was the best match of both of their careers. I think they're absolutely right. It was two of the best ever on the big WrestleMania stage in a hot feud with a loud crowd going crazy for everything they did. It was pro wrestling perfection.
