WWE Royal Rumble 2021: What's Next For The Night’s Losers?
5. Goldberg
Goldberg vs. Drew McIntyre was the most unpredictable match on the card. Odd to say, considering the two Rumbles, but with Bianca Belair’s Chronicle documentary airing before the pay-per-view and Edge swapping #2 for #1, fans were somewhat clued into the outcomes.
As expected, the match was a short explosion of finishing moves that while passable, was surpassed by similar matches between the WCW icon and Brock Lesnar.
The purpose of the match was to propel McIntyre as the current generation’s megastar rather than give direction to the part-time legend’s future with WWE. The rub and hug from Goldberg was a little on the nose. WWE may have considered a literal passing of the torch but realised their programming already has too much fire-centric content.
For a man famed for asking “Who’s Next?”, Goldberg’s future is uncertain. He's contracted for two WWE matches per year. With the McIntyre bout down, facing John Cena one of the few dream matches left for both men. A cinematic match stipulation at ‘The Showcase of the Immortals’ would prove advantageous.
