Superman: Red Son is a comic book mini-series depicting an alternate timeline in which baby Kal-El lands in Soviet Ukraine rather than America.

Kal-El is thus brought up as a communist, and as an adult privileged by his unique power, he mixes in a political milieu which includes Joseph Stalin. Ultimately, Superman goes on to take over from Stalin when dead, governing as the new Soviet dictator.

Superman rules with an iron fist, becoming progressively more cruel to disloyal subjugates, employing punishments such as fitting people with cranial implants to quash disobedient behaviour.

Lex Luthor is his American Cold War antagonist, attempting plot-after-plot to bring down the Soviet ruler, but failing consistently. Despite Superman’s twisted methods, at his core he is still driven by the desire to make the world better for people, and ultimately Lex is able to use these altruistic proclivities against him.

This leads to Superman relinquishing his premiership, and stepping into the obscurity of normal society in disguise.
