4. PunchLine #1: Written In Blood

Punchline #1
Lone Star Press

Jessie is an average girl sitting on a bench in a cemetery with a sketchbook. Mel is a super-powered heroine who sits on the bench next to her, bleeding out from a gun shot. The only way to save Mel's life is for her to pass her powers to Jessie and she jumps at the chance, but who knows what deal she just made to supernatural forces.

This is only technically a new #1 because it was finally released digitally on ComiXology, but this is a comic that really does deserve a spotlight. Bill Williams handles the introductions of Mel and Jessie in an odd way, allowing a dying Mel to divulge what sort of person she is even while dying and Jessie to lay the groundworks of her home life.

While there's only one real gag in this towards the end with Jessie thinking about her superhero costume and learning the cold doesn't bother heroes. That's just one example of how much fun this series has with the premise of a superhero book without ever going into parody. Plus that hook at the end gives a great hook to actually want to see where this is going to go.
